So, what is Shut The Trash?
It's a very simple device that keeps your trash inside the bin, where it belongs. Even when one of those seventy-mile-an hour windstorms whip into Vermont...just in time for trash night. Here's what it looks like:
The whole purpose is to keep our neighborhoods, streets, forests, and wilderness clean and free of litter. Just one bin knocked over by wind or animals can spread trash up to a mile away. Shut The Trash's mission is to keep this from happening. No more waking up to this:

Q & A
Q: The bins are owned by the trash collection company. How do I know they're OK with me using Shut The Trash?
A: There are several reasons to be confident you aren't going against the wishes of the collection companies:
1) We have approached several Vermont companies, including Cassela, Gauthiers, and Myers, and we have had nothing but positive feedback.
2) Most rural Vermont towns are serviced by semi-automated garbage trucks. This means that the operators still manually put the bin manually onto the loader. Shut The Trash does not interfere with this operation at all. If you live in an urban area where fully automated trucks are used (neither operator ever leaves the cab) then Shut The Trash is not a good fit.
3) Garbage collection operators don't like spilled trash any more than you do. It just means more time needed to do the messy job of scooping much of it up by hand.
4) Shut The Trash is much safer and easier for operators than other alternatives such as bungee cords or tied ropes.
5) Since Shut The Trash uninstalls cleanly, there is no damage whatsoever to the bins.
Q: Will this product keep animals from getting into my trash?
A: That depends on the animal. It will certainly discourage small animals, but if it's bears we're talking about, then my money's on the bear (although if there's a completely unprotected bin right next door, then the bear might be discouraged enough to go for your neighbor's bins instead. But a bear is stronger than Shut The Trash.
